Two earrings can look identical on a tray and behave completely differently on your ear. One keeps its color for decades; the other dulls in a season. The difference is not craftsmanship — it is metallurgy. This guide explains what 14K gold, gold plating and sterling silver actually are, what each costs to produce, how each ages, and which one makes sense for the way you wear jewelry.
Pure gold — 24 karat — is too soft for jewelry that gets worn daily. It bends, it scratches, and a post made of it would slowly deform. 14K gold solves this by mixing 58.3% pure gold with alloys of silver, copper, zinc and sometimes palladium or nickel. The result is a metal that keeps gold's color and resistance to tarnish while gaining the hardness needed for prongs, hinges and posts. Yellow 14K gold uses copper and silver for warmth; white 14K gold uses palladium or nickel for its silvery tone, usually finished with a rhodium plating for brightness.
18K gold contains 75% pure gold and is softer and warmer in color. It is the standard for high-end European jewelry, but for earrings that face hair products, pillows and daily handling, 14K holds its finish longer and costs meaningfully less. Our 14K gold diamond studs use 14K for exactly this reason: the settings stay tight for years, not seasons.
Gold-plated jewelry is a base metal — usually brass, sometimes stainless steel — coated in a thin layer of gold through electroplating. The coating on fashion jewelry typically measures between 0.1 and 1 micron. That is enough to look identical to solid gold on day one, and it is why plating dominates the under-$50 market: you get the look of gold at a tenth of the cost.
Plating wears where friction lives: the back of the post, the inside of a hinge, the surface that touches your hair. As the coating thins, the base metal shows through as dull or dark spots, and nickel in the brass can reach the skin — the usual cause of "my earrings suddenly irritate me." The lifespan depends on thickness and care. Keep plated earrings dry, put them on after perfume and lotion, and store them separately, and a good plating holds its color for years of regular wear. Our gold-plated hoops and climbers are priced for exactly this trade-off: current style at accessible cost, with the expectation of eventual re-plating or replacement.
Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver mixed — usually with copper — for hardness. It is a precious metal, hypoallergenic for most people, and it lasts indefinitely. Its one weakness is tarnish: silver reacts with sulfur in air and in some skin chemistries, forming a dark surface layer. Tarnish is cosmetic, not structural, and it removes completely with a polishing cloth or a silver dip.
They look similar; they are not interchangeable. Sterling silver costs a fraction of white gold and can be re-polished forever, but it needs that occasional polishing and it is softer. White gold is harder, never tarnishes, and holds gemstones more securely, but it costs several times more and needs rhodium re-plating every few years to stay bright. For everyday studs and hoops under $100, silver is the rational choice — our 4mm sterling silver studs and 8mm silver hoops are the two styles customers repurchase most. For pieces you expect to hand down, white or yellow 14K gold wins.
14K gold: 58.3% pure gold, extremely durable, hypoallergenic, never tarnishes, $85 to $2,400 for earrings, lasts generations.
Sterling silver: 92.5% pure silver, durable with care, hypoallergenic for most, tarnishes but polishes clean, $18 to $40 for most earring styles, lasts decades.
Gold-plated: base metal with a gold surface layer, good durability with careful wear, may irritate sensitive ears once plating thins, $12 to $40, refreshable by re-plating.
Spend on metal where the wear is constant: studs and huggies you never take out justify 14K gold. Spend on design where the look matters more than the metal: trend-driven crawlers and statement hoops are what plating was invented for. And when you are unsure how a style will fit your habits, silver is the honest middle path — precious metal behavior at fashion jewelry cost.
